It took a few moments for her eyes to adjust to the light.

“What am I doing here?” Jade blinked in the brilliant sunlight even after a few seconds in the magical darkness. She was back at the entrance to Changeling City. If she wasn’t mistaken, she’d been thrown out! As the fog of travelling through the magic entrance lifted, Jade remembered Keisha. Jade sank down heavily onto the dry earth. She didn’t like Keisha. As an assassin, the girl was heartless, and Jade had to admit her connection to Aeron irked her. As a werewolf, she was headstrong and bossy. But becoming a werewolf was good for her. It mellowed her somehow. Jade had taken her on a wild goose chase that had gotten her killed. The werewolf insisted on coming, and she had no choice but to let her come along. But she could have forbidden it if she wanted. While Jade wouldn’t go so far as to say that living in her house had domesticated Keisha—it had tamed her. She would have done as she was told. Now that Keisha was dead, Jade had to admit she had her reasons for bringing a pair of werewolves along. She was afraid.

A dark hole appeared, and Jade brightened. “Keisha?”

Something silver flew at her. Skraela. The weight of it on her back was somehow reassuring. She didn’t feel so alone. Jade buried her face in her arm, feeling her tears run down her cheeks. Well, she’d been through a lot.

“Are you crying?”

Jade’s eyes snapped open. “Oh my God, you’re alive!”

Keisha stared at her in alarm as Jade jumped to her feet and ran toward her. When Jade threw her arms around her, Keisha looked like she wanted to run in the opposite direction.

“You’re crying because you thought you lost me. You like me.”

Jade knew she’d never hear the last of it.

“Do I smell burning?” Keisha scrunched up her nose in a very dog-like way that made Jade laugh.

Jade sniffed. It was like roast pork, reminding her of how long it had been since she’d eaten. She noticed the steam coming off her skin. Oh, the appetizing cooking smell was coming from her. Was that sick to make her feel hungry? It was shocking how quickly she forgot the dangers of sunlight. She stepped over a small shrub to reach the shade of a tree.

“Ahh! Watch it, ruffian.” The shrub had doubled in size and seemed to have a mouth and a very angry face.

“Oh, sorry, I didn’t see you there.”

The Spriggan growled at her. Well, he would wear all brown, and his filthy matted hair was green like over-grown leaves. It made for good surveillance, looking like a tree. It also got you stepped on. Jade sat beneath the tree that, along with her healing powers, reduced the damage to her skin to a gentle steaming.

“Hey, where’s Robert?” Jade remembered he hadn’t been there when Keisha came to the rescue. Keisha was pacing but froze so abruptly Jade knew she said the wrong thing.
